Foothills Mall is recognized nationally for service project

Foothills Mall was named finalist in this year's Maxi Awards, which is considered to be the shopping center industry's version of the Oscars.

The contest is sponsored by the International Council of Shopping Centers, and winners are chosen from several categories such as Retailer Productivity, Community Service and Public Relations.

Foothills Mall received recognition for Center Productivity for a project it launched with home builder US Home Corp. and the Heart Foundation, a private charity that provides shelters for homeless women with children in the Tucson area.

The group built and held a drawing for a split-level Toy Factory Playhouse that served as a backdrop for Santa Claus during the holiday season. The structure, which a local family won in the raffle, was about 25 feet long, said Regina Harmon, operations marketing and specialty leasing manager at Foothills Mall.

"It benefited so many different people," she said. "It saved both the ownership group and the tenants from having to purchase new holiday decor."

US Home and its subcontractors built the structure, and more than $8,000 was raised for the Hearth Foundation. Foothills Mall and its partners in the project have agreed to make it an annual event.

This year's Maxi Awards winners will be announced Oct. 30 during a ceremony at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. It will be part of the International Council of Shopping Centers' conference and trade exposition.
